Spectacled spiderhunter - I think

This bird, from Sukau, Malaysia, was drinking nectar from these flowers. I think it is a spectacled spiderhunter, which has to be one of the coolest bird names out there.

Kilmer Middle School students in concert

Tonight was a concert by the Kilmer Middle School strings kids. Lots of violins, cellos and similar. They were very much worth listening to and I have to say I enjoyed the whole program. It was great.

A bat from Borneo, let's take a close look at the face of a Hipposideros bat (that is the Genus of the bat)

Most of my work is in the New World, as in North and South America. As opposed to the Old World which is everything else, pretty much. Today that may be an outdated way of talking about things, but with bats those terms have been used a lot to describe where different bats are found, so I use them here.

Few bats are found across this divide. So when I am working in Borneo, pretty much every bat I see is not something I can find anywhere in the Americas. And one of the many Genera of bats only found in the old world is the Hipposideros.

This bat is from Sukau, Malaysia, Island of Borneo, and looks like a fawn leaf-nosed bat (Hipposideros cervinus), but it was not keyed out so I won't swear by this ID. It is a Hipposideros, but to get to certain species more work needs done.

Nope, my web server will not, after an hour of trying, post any photos tonight. Will publish more pics when the server gets it stuff together. I am getting annoyed at how often the server is down, but how does one migrate a website with hundreds of photos to another web server?

Looks like something in the Caliga genus, but I will leave this one unidentified.

Yoplait yogurt litter blinds squirrel

Don't litter. Period. It is not just an eyesore, but harms wildlife. Here is a photo of a gray squirrel with a yogurt container stuck on it's head. It could not get out even with much clawing at the thing.

I am vaccinated for rabies, but didn't want to get bit. I've been bitten by a squirrel before and it hurts. Way more painful than the hundreds of times I've been bitten by bats with my work.

So I grabbed the yogurt container and shook the squirrel out of it. It went nuts when I grabbed it, but after being freed it was pretty cool.

Just another day of saving wildlife.

Please don't litter.

Tysons Corner Center ice skating rink

Tysons Corner is widely known as a shopping area, with two malls and lots of stores. But just this weekend they opened the Tysons Corner Center Ice Rink.
