Bird Stuff

With over 10,000 species worldwide, and an army of birders out there trying to see them all, there is little that this site can add to the really great birding websites. However, having visited some pretty good birding places, this and that might be worth noting, along with a few pictures. Things will be added here on occasion, mostly a stray picture now and again.
Suriname Birds

One of the great websites for South American birds is on Suriname. Check out THIS website for awesome photos and songs. As for field guides, some folks like the Birds of VZ while others like the Birds of Northern South America. There is a coffee table book on the birds of Suriname, which is not a field guide yet a very nice book. For shorebirds there is a great book by Arie Spaans in both Dutch and English, Kustvogels van Suriname/Coastal Birds of Suriname.
For the casual birder, Suriname is quite expensive to visit, yet could be enormously rewarding. But for the ardent birder it is almost a must visit. With large expanses of unbroken rainforest, the truly rare birds are here, although as always, difficult to actually see without a great guide and the use of recorded bird calls. Other than a few widely known rare-bird sites, like the cock-of-the-rock leks, it takes time, patience and skill to see the birds.
And it is all worth it. The birds of Suriname are diverse, and as with anywhere there are a lot of difficult birds, but there are more than enough stunning birds which can readily be seen to keep everyone smiling.
