The proboscis bat (Rhynchonycteris naso) is a common bat near water. It can be found, by sharp-eyed folks, roosting on tree trunks overhanging rivers all across Suriname. At Raleigh Vallen, there is a multi-story wooden structure along the river where the boats land, and hanging from the second-floor ceiling are often colonies of these bats. And oh yes, we do want these bats around. They tend to feed low over water picking off loads of mosquitoes, and are likely one of the better mosquito-catchers among the insectivorous bats.
