All the brown bits in the leaf near the stem are where the bats chewed the leaf to make it droop into a tent. This picture was taken looking straight up at the bats.

Too much snow, cold and ice. Just thinking of tropical things and this pic of a mamma sloth with a baby at the Firestone Center for Restoration Ecology warms things up.
This photo was taken in a cave in Virginia. The entrance is a sinking stream, and much detritus washes in, and this fungus was growing on a log just into the dark zone.
Perihelion, is when the sun is closest to the earth during any given year. This year, it occurred early in the morning of today, January 2. But I decided that since I could not take a photo of the exact time, given that the sun would not be up, I would go for a sunset photo.
And about sunset, I found myself Nordic skiing with my son in the Bogstad area on the western outskirts of Oslo. However, there were fog layers in the valley. Too late to drive up high to get above them, so I made what I could of it all. The photos are not at all what I was looking for, but weather is weather. We enjoyed the skiing, to a point (there was an icy crust on the snow that gave some troubles). And there was a fog in the valley that did not make taking photos easy. But here are the pics of the day, close to the sun's perihelion. In Oslo, New Year's Eve is the one time when fireworks are allowed and encouraged. There were endless fireworks, culminating in a midnight madness. But the weather was foggy and there was a general "brown" cast to things. Amazing to watch (and hear) but less stunning for the camera.
And so here are my New Year's Eve photos from Oslo. |
