A pretty critter from Borneo.

A butterfly from Borneo. It seems to have just come out of its chrysalis, but there is much to question with this photo.

I am usually pretty good at identifying frogs.  But this one eludes me.

Tracks across frozen lake

The pond at Fair Lakes was mostly iced over. But there was this track across the pond.  Not sure what made this but it is most interesting.

It continues to be really cold here, but this animal track is something to ponder.

The Lunar New Year

2/19/2015

Just because you really need to know this...

Today the Google Doodle is about the Lunar New Year.  I was unfamiliar with the concept and looked it up on Wikipedia.  Here is what it says:

Lunar New Year is the first day of a secular, sacred, or other year whose months are coordinated by the cycles of the moon. The whole year may account to a purely lunar calendar, which is not coordinated to a solar calendar (and, thus, may progress or retrogress through the solar year by comparison to it, depending on whether the lunar calendar has more or fewer than 13 months); or the year may account to a lunisolar calendar, whose months coordinate to the cycles of the moon but whose length is periodically adjusted to keep it relatively in sync with the solar year - typically by adding an intercalary month, when needed.

There you go.  Hope that cleared up any confusion.  So Happy New Year!

Cold but got out a bit at Fair Lakes, VA

An area with a lot of row houses. Nice places, and there is this pond in the middle of it all.  In general a pretty good place to live.  I walked around the pond there and took a few pics.  Nothing amazing.

In general, this area is good for birding, but today just so-so for pics.

First, a photo of a hawk.  An immature hawk.  This photo was taken during a snow storm, and I can't get the ID right.  Looks a lot like a red-shouldered hawk, but...

And then there is this.  There are birds in trees, but this caught my attention.
