National Geographic video "Expedition Raw" from Gomantong Caves, Borneo (think lots of bugs!)

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Just posted by Nora Rappaport of National Geographic is a cool video of the creepy crawly critters of Gomantong Caves in Borneo.  The footage was shot by Guy van Rentergem on our last trip there.  I am the guy standing there while McFarlane narrates about how all these bugs gets in your boots and gear.  Wild caves to work in and if you follow this blog you have seen many photos from there.

A link to the blog post with the video and text is here:

http://voices.nationalgeographic.com/2015/10/29/billions-of-bugs-feast-on-flesh-and-dung-in-borneo/

Here is the video, but it is worth a look at the blog post to read the text, enjoy!

And since I should add a photo of yet another crawly from the cave's guano, here is a greenish-yellow snail mucking about.

Raccoon (Procyon lotor) in Falls Church, Virginia

Falls Church has a lot of wildlife, but like most places the larger mammals tend to come out at night.  This raccoon had no fear and I was able to get quite close for a photo.

Staying in Frackville, Pennsylvania

When I was in Frackville, PA recently, my motel was not exactly packed.

A sleepy motel in Frackville, really
But I have to admit since I was working at night it was quiet.  Now, across the street was another place called Granny's.  The entrance sign is beside Bobbie's Bloomers (a nice shop) and claims a motel, restaurant and cold beer for $39.  Well, that's the room price I suspect.

Buuuuuuut...  The signage at the office provides some very contradictory messages.

Granny's Motel: Should I stay or should I go?
And, given that giant people are a part of Americana, this place has a real special statue.  First of all, it is giant, but the super-scary face on "Granny" is quite frightening up close.  And while there is a lot more to be said about this photo, I think the one thing that says altogether too much is the headless doll that the little girl is holding.

Tri-colored bat (Perimyotis subflavus) from Pennsylvania

I don't usually post photos of bats with the mouth open as it is less attractive, but this tri-colored bat just would not shut hit trap so he gets to be famous as a loudmouth.

Lunar esclipse

Recently there was a full lunar eclipse of a supermoon.  Too darn cloudy where I was to see it very well, but a short break gave me an opportunity to at least get a photo of the partial eclipse.

Sorry for the big gap in getting photos up.  I just didn't have a decent way to do much over the last week or so.  I should be back to daily again now.
