Sitting around the pool, doing nothing, This little guy was spotted and so got his picture taken. A pic from the Olympus TG-3 in microscope mode. This mantid, which seems in nymph stage, and I can't positively identify, was very small, just about an inch and a half long.

Someone has to install the outer windows on tall buildings! These guys seem pretty relaxed about it.
The season for collecting nests was a bit later than our trip, but there was some thing going on that we weren't involved with. Collecting nests and moving the birds. I had the opportunity to take some photos and will post more soon.
Lots of arachnids in the caves. Here are a few with more to come.
Rats are common in tropical caves, but in a cave full of nest guards and associated trash they are abundant.
This is the big pit in the lower cave (Simud Hitam or the Black Cave). The bright dot about half-way up the left side of the pic is Warren Roberts, who is reasonably close to the bottom of the pit. Then, down the talus slope, is a nester guard hut where Benjamin Schroeder is sitting.
There were two guards in this hut when I set up the photo, and I really wanted them in the photo, but they didn't speak any English. And every time I tried to tell them to stay for the photo they would indicate that they understood that I wanted them to leave for the photo. Ah well, I got a very nice photo of the pit and guard hut anyway. For the cavers out there, this is a major publication on where the karst is. A huge effort and they are still working to refine it. GIS ready and all that.
http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2014/1156/ A spiffy internet speed is good for viewing the maps. cockroaches are the norm, but lots of other stuff. There were a number of things going on in and around Grand Caverns last weekend. My goal was to get a few passage shots in the cave with some tourists in them. This plan was a total fail when some giant company held its annual picnic and hundreds of people showed up. Just too many tourists to do much in the cave. Next month will be the Bluegrass Festival which is a really nice event: http://www.grandcaverns.com/v.php?pg=15 Here are a couple of the pics I did get while in Grand And just for giggles, here is a photo I took after caving...
