I generally am behind the camera taking still photos of our cave work on expeditions. But on the trip to the Gomantong Caves of Borneo last summer, Guy van Rentergem got me to talk about several of the biological bits of the caves on video. The ecology of the caves is cool, and here is Guy's latest video production.

This bird, from Sukau, Malaysia, was drinking nectar from these flowers. I think it is a spectacled spiderhunter, which has to be one of the coolest bird names out there.
This shot is looking up at the surface from the bottom of a 142-meter deep pit. Pretty awesome stuff in Borneo.
Last night my web server was apparently down, as I could not log in. Here is the pic from Borneo that I was planning to post. My server is still having some troubles so that is all for today.
I have a number of photos from Borneo, beyond what I blogged so far, but most aren't so interesting. I will put in a pic or two, but mostly now it is all about how my pics can help science,
Time to get back to the Borneo pics. I posted a bunch of them before heading off to Costa Rica, but I should get back to the Borneo pics.
Holy name painting batman, I caught this guy painting his name on a cave wall in Borneo! And while the photo does not show the culprit in a way that he can be identified, I identify him here. Okay, if that whole first bit of text is taken out of context, which it is, it would seem like he spray painted on the wall. No way! This photo was taken using light painting. I kept the camera shutter open on a tripod while he used a flashlight to light-paint his name. No harm to the cave! He had this weird light that gave out a square, focused beam, so doesn't look like a flashlight and gave this an honest graffiti look.
So, putting up a pic of Don, I will note that he and I are off on yet another adventure, and photos from Costa Rica will start tomorrow. |
