Borneo has big caves, no doubt. Deer Cave and the Sarawak Chamber were or are the largest single cave passage and the largest cave room respectively. in the world. New discoveries may have eclipsed these records, but none of that is my business. I just know that Deer cave is one huge whomping cave passage, and I had to make a photograph of it. To photograph Deer Cave, I had just two people available, and for my big shots just one. And, in the cave, used no flashes but just the entrance light (for the big shots) My photographic assignments are global, but this one was ridiculous. How can I photograph a half-mile of cave with just one assistant. But got it. Using hand/light signals I was able to position Don McFarlane to get a great shot. But... This picture has, for the most part, been unpublished, Why? Well, it is a perspective issue. McFarlane is on a rocky bit in the cave that is over 200 meters from the entrance to the cave, and 250 meters from the camera. While it shows big cave, it really doesn't show how really big the cave is. |
