hey cool site

do you know what the tropical white bats are called ? Not the little tent making ones with yellow piglet noses, Honduran white bats. its another species. Here is a pic of one.

Also do you know anything about the (lavia frons) african yellow winged bat? There is SO little about this bat on the internet and in books I have, thanks!

Hi Lorraine,

The white bat you are thinking of is the northern ghost bat (Diclidurus albus). A fairly rare bat but one of the best-looking. This bat has a very widespread distribution in the neotropics, but it is quite hard to find one even if you are looking (mostly under palm fronds during the day).

The African yellow-winged bat (Lavia frons) occurs across much of tropical Africa, but as with many bats there is not so much ecological information on it. It is not typically found in the heart of the forests, where so much work has been done, and thus remains a bat worthy of more specific study. It is mostly noted as a riparian bat (likes to fly and feed along rivers and streams), and is solely insectivorous (which is interesting given that other members of it's family are not so). Probably the best you can do for a site with information about this bat is Mammalian Species, although it is noteworthy how old many of the references are...
